Tribute & Message From The Family

Loving husband and father with an incredible sense of humor, warm smile and contagious laugh

Michael Lee Gorhum, born February 10, 1968 in San Antonio, TX, found peace in the arms of our Lord and Savior on August 20, 2015 at the age of 47. He was a loving husband and father with an incredible sense of humor, a warm smile and a contagious laugh.

As a strong Christian man, his faith was evident to his family and friends. Mike graduated from East Central High School in 1986 where he proudly played for the Hornet Football Team. He married his high school sweetheart, Darlene Michalek, in 1992. He continued his education at San Antonio College earning an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. From there he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Education from Wayland Baptist University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from City University. He was a longtime student of Kim’s Academy of Tae Kwon Do and recently attained his fifth degree black belt. His daily routine included running, crossfit and weight training. He had a passion for sports that kept him actively involved in his children’s lives, coaching many CYO teams over the years.

Following in his father’s footsteps, he joined the San Antonio Police Department in 1989, serving the citizens admirably and honorably for the next 25 years. Through diligence and commitment, he rose to the rank of Captain. He shared his knowledge and experience teaching courses in criminal justice, as an adjunct professor for San Antonio College and the University of Incarnate Word.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, and two children, Zachary and Abigail. He also leaves behind his parents, Robert and Darlene (Crain) Gorhum, Jackie and Kathy Blankenship, Mary Lowery; and mother-in-law, Claudine Michalek. He was blessed to have numerous siblings: brothers, John Gorhum, Robert Gorhum and wife Peggy, Alan Blankenship; sister, Anissa Ludwig; step-sister, Carin Crain and husband David; step-brother, Raymond Crain and wife Michelle; brother-in-law, Glenn Michalek and wife Michele; sister-in-law, Sondra McNiel and husband Mark. He also had numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, August Michalek.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
