What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are the aromatic, volatile liquids distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and seeds. Generally speaking, essential oils are the essence of a plant. Every time you pick a leaf from a peppermint plant and rub it between your fingers and breathe in that fresh, pepperminty smell, you are inhaling essential oil. And herein lies the magic. The chemical composition of the essential oil is unique to each species of plant. It is these various chemical constituents that work synergistically with the body, supporting it both physically and energetically, to promote health and well-being. Essential oils are nature’s own pharmacopeia.
Essential oils are very complex substances. They are mosaics of hundreds to thousands of different chemicals. Many factors determine the level of each chemical from one batch of essential oil to the next. And because they are distilled, they are extremely concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs.
Human-Kind’s First Medicine
For many centuries essential oils and other aromatics we used for religious ritual, the treatment of illness and other physical and spiritual needs. Ancients texts as early as 4500 BC tell of concentrated plant substances used for spiritual and medical applications. Many hieroglyphics on the walls of Egyptian temples depict the blending of oils and describe hundreds of oil recipes. There are over 200 references to aromatics cited in the Old and New Testaments. Essential oils were reintroduced into modern medicine during the late 19th and early 20th century when they were used by military physicians extensively for their antibacterial and wound-healing properties. Today many universities worldwide are conducting research that supports the healing properties of essential oils.
Why Therapeutic Grade?
Many scented oils, touted as essential oils, are extracted from plant sources using harsh chemicals, diluted or copied and produce in a lab. Cheap copies bring cheap results and have the potential to be toxic. Therefore, it is imperative to trust your source and take great care in choosing high-quality, therapeutic grade essential oils.
Young Living offers pure, unadulterated essential oils and essential oil blends. In-house and independent laboratory testing shows that Young Living Essential Oils meet high industry standards that qualify them as therapeutic-grade. This means that health professionals choose them for promoting health and wellness and you can feel confident knowing that they are safe for you and your family.
How to Use Essential Oils
There are three basic way to use essential oils:
◾ Rub a drop or two of essential oil in your hands and hold over your nose
◾ Diffuse into the air using a cold air diffuser
◾ Add a few drops of essential oil to a bowl of steaming water, cover your head with a towel and hold over the bowl, creating a tent, and inhale the steam.
◾ Apply essential oil directly onto skin where indicated. Test on a small area if you have sensitive skin. If irritation occurs, dilute by applying an organic vegetable oil over the area, either before or after applying the essential oil. NEVER attempt to rinse an essential oil with water. It will spread the essential oil over a larger area of skin, increasing the irritation.
◾ Put several drop of oil into an empty capsule and swallow with water.
◾ Add 1-2 drops to a glass of water or rice milk.
◾ Add 1-2 drops onto a piece of bread.
◾ Add 1-2 drops into a teaspoon of honey.
◾ If you are really adventurous, drop directly onto tongue and swallow.
Only pure essential oils, proven safe and labeled as dietary supplements, should be used internally. Dilution and dosage is dependent on the age, size and health constitution of the individual. Follow the recommended dosage on individual product labels to ensure safety or seek the advice of a health professional before administering oils internally.
